HEADS #3 Original Art by Tony Mono
Based in St Leonards and Hastings since 1995, Tony Mono is a multi-disciplinary visual and sound artist.
Late-diagnosed with Asperger’s in 2012, Tony’s work is a response to experiencing life and society as an outsider. The ‘Heads’ series in particular investigates the way we present ourselves to others, often projecting personas, knowingly or unconsciously constructed. The work often peers behind the facade, revealing skeletal layers that hint at our mortality.
At the outset of the first Covid lockdown in 2020, and free from the time/energy constraints of employment, Tony was able to fully focus on his creative practice for the first time in decades. Confirming how essential this activity was to him, not only as a means of personal expression but as a therapeutic necessity to process and deal with day-to-day living. Tony believes that experiencing the ‘creative flow’ has been more effective in improving his mental well-being than any medication or other treatment.
Tony has previously exhibited at Whitworth, Manchester; Ikon, Birmingham; ICA, London amongst others, with sound works featured on Channel 4, BBC Radio, and various film soundtracks. Since the late 1980s however, he has gradually disengaged with the art world, working sporadically and in isolation. This is the first display of his work since then and results from a chance meeting at St Leonards Modern Goods between K, Tony and a mutual friend who suggested the idea.
